100 pounds of Nutella a day: Columbia students obsessed and stealing spread

From the Nutella website
Columbia students are reported to be obsessed with Nutella and are stealing 100 pounds of Nutella a day according to the dining executive on campus. Nutella, a popular spread made from chocolate and hazelnuts, has been disappearing from campus dining rooms for weeks. School officials believe that as much as $5,000 worth of Nutella is stolen every week.
With students stealing 100 pounds of Nutella a day, Columbia has been forced to increase how much it buys to sustain supplies. Students are not just taking cups and filling it with the spread. They are also stealing entire jars of Nutella straight from the shelves. Columbia only started to offer the spread in February, so it was surprised by the popularity it has gained in one month.
If students continue to take 100 pounds of Nutella a day, dining officials believe it will cost the campus $250,000 a year to provide the spread. About 5,000 students use Columbia’s dining halls. Columbia has not stated if it will eliminate Nutella from the meal plans in the future. For now, students will still be able to get the spread for free with a dining plan like before. At Columbia, the plan costs about $2,300 per semester.
School officials claim that Nutella is not the most expensive item on the menu, so they will continue to offer it. However, they are concerned about other ideas they wanted to add to the menus. Considering that 100 pounds of Nutella a day are disappearing from the dining halls, they are not going to add lobster tails for now.
Columbia claims it is more concerned about students wasting entire Nutella jars than the stealing of 100 pounds of Nutella a day. It seems that some have discovered students throwing them away even if they were not empty. However, students have responded with claims that the dining hall rules do not prohibit them from taking as much as food as they need, and many explain they can easily eat an entire jar a day.
Students have accused the university of exaggerating how much Nutella is stolen from the campus. They also believe administration is lying about how much it spends on Nutella. If 100 pounds of Nutella a day are used by students, then it should not cost $5,000 a week to provide it. Some are worried that the school is simply using this as an excuse to raise dining rates later.
