A 4-year-old girl came home from her Bronx day care center with a nasty surprise — a handful of crack cocaine vials in her hand, and the drug in her system.
Sabrina Straker’s daughter, Serenity, found the drugs on Oct. 5 at Lil Inventors Preschool on Andrews Ave. in University Heights, and took them home to her mother. She told her mom she put one in her mouth, Sabrina Straker told PIX11.
The girl “tested positive for crack cocaine,” a city Health Department spokeswoman said. The agency is now investigating the day care center.
“This is such a shock to us,” said the day care’s director, Yvonne Joseph, who told the Daily News she called the city’s Administration for Children’s Services.
“The children came out into the yard after five in the afternoon and these little blue things were laying in the yard,” she said. The vials were clear, not blue.
The day care’s workers noticed children were holding the small vials on Friday, but didn’t realize what they were, Joseph said. The workers collected them and threw them away, she said.
Serenity told her mom that another boy in the center gave him the vials, calling them his “teeth,” PIX11 reported.
“She could have died if she ingested this,” Straker told the station, saying she wanted the day care center shut down. “I was furious.”
Joseph said she thinks someone in the neighborhood threw the vials over the fence to get rid of them.
“We’ve been in the neighborhood for over 40 years, and nothing like this has ever happened,” Joseph said. “Unfortunately, we live in a high-risk neighborhood, and it’s a neighborhood that, you know… you know what goes on in neighborhoods that are high-risk.”
She said the day care’s surveillance system isn’t working, and is scheduled to be repaired.
The city health department sent an inspector to Lil Inventors Wednesday, and are still investigating the incident. ACS officials said they’re not investigating the day care, and the NYPD couldn’t provide info on the case Wednesday afternoon.
