Kalamazoo, Mich. — Last week, baseball fans around the country saw the cute side of the Kalamazoo Growlers’ 6-year-old Coach Drake during the pitching coach’s mound visit.
Then, things got heated, as the first-year assistant with a reputation for a bad temper lost his cool during his team’s matchup with the Wisconsin Woodchucks.
It started in the seventh inning of Sunday’s Northwoods League contest, when the fiery youngster marched from the dugout to talk with home plate umpire Rob Minter about a called catch by a Wisconsin outfielder, who appeared to trap the ball after it hit the ground.
When Minter refused to change the call, an enraged Drake threw his arms up in the air, shook his finger up at the umpire, stormed in a circle around the official and kicked dirt on his shoes.
That was enough to get Drake ejected, but the tot wasn’t done giving the officials a piece of his mind, so he went back to the dugout, grabbed four bats and tossed them into the infield as far as his little arms could launch.
A bucket of baseballs was the next victim of Drake’s outrage, as he grabbed the five-gallon pail and dumped its contents along the first baseline, before marching back to home plate and spiking his hat on the base.
As of Tuesday afternoon, the video of the ejection had more than 330,000 views on Twitter.
Drake’s eruption was in stark contrast to his debut mound visit from the Growlers’ July 5 game against the Kokomo Jackrabbits, which collected over one million views on social media.
Fans hoping to see another glimpse of the passionate coach will need to wait until next week, as the Growlers are off for the Northwoods League All-Star break until Thursday, when they begin a six game road trip.
The team’s next home game is Wednesday, July 24, and although it’s unclear how long the league will suspend Drake, it’s a good bet that a six-game punishment will be enough to get him back inside the Homer Stryker dugout by next week.
“Drake is awaiting punishment from the league and is likely to face a multi-game ban as well as a fine garnished from his allowance,” said a release from the Growlers’ front office.
