A 70-year-old Aurora man has been arrested for allegedly stealing more than $714,376 from the Aurora Veterans of Foreign Wars post.
According to the Ohio Attorney General’s Office, Dan Molnar, of 120 Timber Lane, had “complete control and access” over the bank accounts of Aurora VFW Post 2629. Authorities also say Molnar used his access to defraud a lottery machine and write improper checks.
Molnar was the quartermaster at the Aurora VFW post.
The Aurora Police Department worked with the Ohio Attorney General’s Office on the case, according to a press release. Molnar has been arrested and is being held in the Portage County jail. He has been charged with aggravated theft, a third-degree felony; tampering with records, a third-degree felony; and money laundering, a third-degree felony.
The indictment filed in Portage County Common Pleas Court indicates that the thefts began in January 2011 and ended in November 2018. A previous Record-Courier story indicated the alleged thefts ended in September 2018, and the VFW held several fundraisers after that.
David Kuhary, the current quartermaster at the Aurora VFW post, said the theft “almost put us under.”
Originally, he said the post thought the amount stolen was much lower, closer to $360,000. The Attorney General’s Office found the theft was significantly more when it dug into the books, he said.
Now, the post has five people who look at the books every month and make sure all the money is accounted for, Kuhary said, instead of just the quartermaster as was done previously.
The quartermaster, commander and three trustees each go through the bank statements and financial records each month to make sure all the money is where it is supposed to be, Kuhary said.
Some of the veterans donated or even loaned the local post money, he said, and they had to take out a mortgage out on the building, which was something they hadn’t had before. It’s been almost two years since the theft was discovered.
“We’re recovering quite nicely,” Kuhary said.
