Burger King has apologized after saying it would give any Russian woman a lifetime supply of Whoppers and 3 million Russian roubles ($47,000), if they were able to get pregnant by any players in the World Cup.
The announcement was posted to the company’s Russian social media accounts, and promised the lifetime supply of its signature sandwich to any woman who would help “ensure the success of the Russian team for generations to come.”
The Associated Press reports the reward was promised to those who would get “the best football genes.”
A.P. reports that Burger King has not responded to request for comment, but that it posted a message to Russian-language TV network VKontakte. The company reportedly said in the statement that, “we offer apologies for the announcement we made. It was too offensive.”
The news organization reports that Russian ads usually hone in on sexist stereotypes especially surrounding sporting events such as the World Cup.
