A man behind the wheel of a pickup truck was impaired when the vehicle slammed into and through the front of a gas station’s convenience store, Fort Lauderdale police said.
Fort Lauderdale resident Joseph Wayne Ligas ,67, was driving the black Dodge Ram 1500 when it plowed through the windows of the Exxon station in the 1300 block of Northeast Fourth Avenue, about 1 p.m., Tuesday, according to investigators.
Surveillance video from inside the store shows displays loaded with merchandise tumbling over and a customer running out of the way as the truck pushed through the rows of shelves.
The customer was taken to the hospital as a precaution and the truck was towed out of the store, police said.
Ligas failed a field-sobriety test and apologized, police said.
He was charged with DUI and causing property damage and was jailed on bonds totaling $1,500, court records show.
