Police in New Mexico arrested a drunk 12-year-old girl after she led them on a high-speed chase with three other kids in the car.

That harrowing pursuit ended when the tween drivers lost control of the car and smashed into a roadside speed limit sign, according to KRQE News in Alamogordo, N.M.

The unidentified girl reportedly told cops she waited for her grandfather to go to bed so she could use his car. The driver was busted for DWI and her passengers, ages 12 and 13, were charged with underaged drinking. No one was injured in the crash.

Alamogordo Police Chief Brian Peete called the incident “concerning.” It’s unclear how the children acquired the alcohol.

“For young folks to get a hold of a) alcohol, and then b) a vehicle, and then adding them both together, normally this situation…” he said. “Often it doesn’t work out as well as it did in this case.”

Police reportedly found liquor-infused iced teas and cheap vodka in the car. The driver first got the officer’s attention when she passed a patrol car on a highway.

“It’s scary,” Peete said. “There’s a lot of mixed emotions with it because we don’t know the situation, the dynamics at home.”
