Deputies believe they have caught the man who broke into a Wendy’s restaurant in Jensen Beach and made himself a hamburger before leaving with the store’s safe.
Patrick Benson, 34, was arrested Saturday and charged with burglary, grand theft and attempted burglary, according to the Martin County Sheriff’s Office.
Surveillance video inside a Wendy’s on Jensen Beach Boulevard captured images of a heavy-set white male wearing a tan ball cap, black tank top, khaki-colored shorts and flip flops with a distinctive tattoo on his left upper arm.
After using a brick to smash in a door, the man started a grill, ate and left with the restaurant’s safe, according to the Sheriff’s Office.
Deputies say the same man also burglarized another restaurant in downtown Jensen Beach and attempted to do the same at a full service gas station but was unable to gain entry.
The Sheriff’s Office received numerous tips from the community that helped lead to the arrest after posting photos from surveillance video on its Facebook page. In the post, deputies referred to the man as “the modern-day Hamburglar.”
