A southeast Texas couple took matters into their own hands when machete-wielding men in clown masks tried to rob them last week.
Police in Texas City, a Gulf Coast city about 35 miles southeast of Houston, were called to the 500 block of 13th Street North just before 2:30 a.m. Friday after a disturbance was reported.
According to authorities, two men in clown masks had walked up to a man and a woman sitting in a parked truck in their driveway. One of the two robbers put a machete to the man’s throat and said, “You gonna give it up, or I’m gonna cut you,” KPRC-TV reported.
The couple fought back, however. The man managed to wrestle the machete away from his assailant, and the woman grabbed a grandchild’s scooter in the driveway and walloped the other robber with it, police said.
When the robbers tried to flee in a vehicle, the couple smashed one of their windows with the scooter, delaying their escape.
Officers arrested Luis Rene Jimenez, 32, and Jose Noel Lugo, 35, on charges of aggravated robbery. The pair remained in the Galveston County jail Thursday, with bail set at $100,000 each.
The couple, Aretha Cardinal and Joseph Nelson, told KTRK-TV that it was still hard to fathom the attack nearly a week later.
“Any weapon is good for me if I can get you off me and my husband, that’s what I’m going to do,” Cardinal told the station. “I used the scooter, broke it in half.”
