A Michigan man says he was forced to sit through a two-hour flight surrounded by dog feces.
The smelly encounter came when Bay City resident Matthew Meehan boarded Delta Air Lines flight 1949 from Atlanta to Miami on Nov. 1.
According to a message he posted to Facebook, he and his fellow passengers eventually noticed dog poop all over the floor and his seat, but not before they sat in it shortly before takeoff. He later posted pictures of dog poop on his shoes and suit.
Meehan told WNEM-TV5 that when he told flight attendants and Delta managers about the issue, they were less than accommodating.
“I have no idea why I wasn’t offered something from the bio hazard kit to clean myself up with,” he told the TV station. “Instead I was handed two paper towels and one of those miniature bottles of Bombay Sapphire, a bottle of gin to clean myself with.”
He went on to say that he was forced to try and clean it himself, throw a blanket down and endure the smell throughout the flight.
Delta said in a statement that the plane was boarded before cleaning was completed following an incident from a previous flight with an ill service animal.
The airline has since been in direct contact with the customer, offering to reimburse his shoes and suit, refund his flight and provide additional compensation for the inconvenience, according to the statement.
“Delta apologizes to customers impacted by the incident and has reached out to make it right, offering a refund and additional compensation.”
“The safety and health of our customers and employees is our top priority, and we are conducting a full investigation while following up with the right teams to prevent this from happening again.”
Upon landing in Miami, the aircraft was taken out of service to be deep cleaned and disinfected, Delta officials said.
