Girard, Ohio — A woman shot her daughter in their home, mistaking the teen for an intruder when she made a surprise trip home from college, according to reports.
The 18-year-old girl is recovering after she was wounded in the arm by a shot from her mother’s .38 special handgun, WFMJ Channel 21 reports. The teen was treated and released at a hospital.
Police tell WKBN Channel 27 the mother was alone in her house at about 9 p.m. Friday when she heard noises from the kitchen. She became frightened because she was not expecting anyone to visit, police say.
When the door to her bedroom opened, she fired a single shot and hit her daughter in the arm, WFMJ reports. She then realized she had shot her daughter.
Police say there were still four live rounds in the weapon, which was found on the floor of the bedroom. Girard Police Chief John Norman says the woman was “clearly distraught,” but the case still will be presented to a prosecutor to see if charges should be filed.
Girard is located just north of Youngstown.
