Police department get enthusiastic response to request for volunteers to get drunk for free

SHARE

So, you’re willing to get drunk for the sake of law and order?

That’s the spirits.

Kutztown Borough Police Department sought three volunteers to drink hard liquor to the point of inebriation so officers could be trained how to administer field sobriety tests during traffic stops.

Seems like everyone in Kutztown, and far beyond, wanted a piece of that action. The department’s request, posted on Facebook, accumulated nearly 600 comments and 1,000 shares in 18 hours.

The comments on the post were, predictably, on the wry side:

“Will this count for my community service?”
“I’ve awaited this day. My destiny has arrived.”
“I’m 35 and a cheap drunk. Sign me up.”
The requirements for volunteers were simple:
* Be in good health between the ages of 25 and 40 with no history of drug or alcohol abuse.
* Have a clean criminal history.
* Be willing to drink hard liquor to the point of inebriation.
* Sign a waiver releasing the Borough of Kutztown of any liability.
* Have a sober/responsible party take care and control after the training.

“Why do you need a clean criminal background?” one commenter mused. “If anyone is qualified at trying to beat a field sobriety test it’s someone who already went to jail for failing one.”

The whole episode was a bit like the Willy Wonka frenzy, and the post was soon updated with the deflating news that all of the Golden Tickets for the April 4 training had been claimed:

“THANK YOU ALL FOR YOUR INTEREST IN HELPING US OUT! WE HAVE HAD AN OVERWHELMING RESPONSE FOR THIS AND AT THIS POINT WE HAVE ENOUGH VOLUNTEERS FOR THIS TRAINING!”

Maybe next time.
