Police nearly hits moose and calf crossing Alaska highway

A moose and her calf were nearly hit by a police car as they skittered across a highway outside Anchorage, Alaska.

This dashcam footage shows an Anchorage Police Department car driving along Glenn Highway as the moose trot out on the road, then stumble and fall as the vehicle comes to a stop.

The calf runs back to the side it came from before galloping across four lanes and a median to the other side of the highway.

“Luckily no one was injured and our Alaskan drivers knew to slow down to a stop. Mama and her calf are okay,” the Anchorage Police Department said on its Facebook post of the video.

Alaska has one of the highest rates of car-moose collisions in the world, according to the Alaska Department of Fish and Game, resulting an average of nearly 800 deaths per year.
