NAPERVILLE, Illinois — A police officer is receiving nationwide praise after his department released dashcam video showing him save a toddler who was running unattended along a busy highway.
A post on the Naperville Police Department’s Facebook page says the incident occurred last month when the 1-year-old boy managed to slip out of his house.
Sgt. Anthony Mannino was driving on Route 59 when he saw the boy running along the right lane of the highway.
The video shows Mannino pull his cruiser up behind the boy and get out, chasing him down and yelling, “Hey, hey, hey, come here,” then stopping him up and telling him “You’re OK, you’re OK.”
Cars continue to drive by in the left lane as the scene unfolds. No one was injured.
Mannino tells CBS Chicago he first thought the boy was a stray dog.
“I have twin boys,” he said. “In this situation, once it’s over and starts to digest, you have this sense this could have been your kid.”
Mannino says the mother showed up moments later and “obviously was very emotional.”
