Lubbock police on Thursday confirmed they’re investigating the circumstances behind a video circulating on Facebook that shows what appears to be a daycare worker abusing a child.
Police confirmed they were made aware of a video featuring a young child at a daycare center in the 3600 block of 50th Street, said LPD spokeswoman Tiffany Taylor. Upon responding to the center, police confirmed an incident had occurred on a previous date.
The case remained under investigation Thursday.
Text on the video states that it was shot at My Little Playhouse. The video shows a daycare worker pulling on a child’s hair while trying to get the child to follow instructions and eat in a cafeteria setting while other children were around. The owner of the location on 50th Street declined to comment Thursday afternoon when asked by A-J Media on scene, but would later release a brief statement:
“The owners and Directors of My Little Playhouse Learning Center LLC were made aware of video footage posted on social media at approximately 11:45 a.m. Staff involved were fired immediately. Local authorities (LPD) has been notified and are investigating accordingly. Texas Department of Childcare Licensing has also been notified.”
A-J Media also has identified the child care worker and reached out for comment.
Paul Zimmerman, a spokesman for the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services, said the agency is also investigating the incident for abuse or neglect. He said TDFPS investigators will turn over the results of their investigation to the department of Health and Human Services, which handles licenses for child care providers.
But that state agency’s child care center database does offer information about the My Little Playhouse location, including that its permit is active and not due for renewal until October 2020.
In the last three years, 20 deficiencies were cited during compliance inspections conducted by DFPS at the center. Five of those deficiencies were weighted as “high,” and generally stemmed from caregivers not knowing how many children were under their care at the time of the inspections. None of the deficiencies reported involved concerns of physical abuse.
