A law enforcement pursuit of a parolee Wednesday night that started in the High Desert ended with gunshots in Fontana and the suspect injured.

The pursuit began when San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department deputies from the Apple Valley station attempted to contact a parolee at a residence as part of a follow-up to an investigation, sheriff’s Sgt. Jeff Allison said at the scene of the shooting.

The man fled in a sedan, and deputies gave chase. The pursuit continued south on the 15 Freeway to the eastbound 10 Freeway. The driver exited at Citrus Avenue and turned north, Allison said.

But the driver did not get far.

Deputies spun out the man’s car on the overpass, Allison said. The man then backed up among several patrol cars, and at least one deputy fired on the driver. In a tweet, the Sheriff’s Department elaborated that the suspect had “attempted to drive into the deputies.”

It wasn’t immediately known if California Highway Patrol and Fontana Police Department officers at the scene also fired. The Fontana officers were there assisting the Sheriff’s Department.

No officers were hurt in the shooting, which happened about 8:55 p.m.

Noting the investigation was just getting started, Allison couldn’t immediately say if the suspect was armed.

Video of the incident was posted on Instagram by a witness.

The driver had multiple visible wounds on his body, according to ABC7. He was transported to a hospital in unknown condition.

Allison said he did not know the type of injuries the driver suffered or what his condition was. Allison did not provide the man’s name or know why he had previously been jailed.

Allison also couldn’t say if there were passengers in the suspect’s car.

A Caltrans crew arrived about 10:45 p.m. Citrus Avenue over the freeway was closed for the investigation. The westbound Citrus off-ramp was open, but motorists could only head north on Citrus. The eastbound off-ramp was closed.
