A Houston woman has been sentenced to 40 years in prison for trying to sell her 2-year-old daughter for sex for $1,200.
Sarah Marie Peters, 25, pleaded guilty Thursday to one count each of sexual performance of a child, promotion of prostitution of a child and attempted human trafficking. She was sentenced to 40 years on the sexual performance charge and 20 years on each of the other two, with the sentences to run concurrently.
Peters has been in custody since her February arrest during an undercover investigation by Montgomery County constables.
An undercover officer contacted Peters online and arranged for the sale of the 2-year-old child, according to the Montgomery County district attorney’s office. Peters then took the girl to Conroe, planning to charge a man $1,200 for sex with her.
Authorities apprehended Peters at a Greyhound station and took her daughter into protective custody.
“The events of this case are hard to believe,” Tyler Dunman, chief of the special crimes bureau at the district attorney’s office, said in a statement. He added that, without the efforts of law-enforcement officials, “this child would have become a victim to the worst type of abuse.”
Peters will not be eligible for parole until 2038.
