Spotsylvania, Virginia — Sheriff’s deputies may have saved the life of an accused child molester, who was severely beaten by the children’s father when the suspect was caught partially nude in their room, reports say.
Mark Stanley, 60, of Burlington, North Carolina, was taken to a hospital for treatment of “severe injuries to his face” before being charged with two counts of indecent liberties and one count of domestic assault, the News Observer reports. He is being held in the Rappahannock Regional Jail without bond.
Spotsylvania County Sheriff’s Capt. Liz Scott tells the Free Lance-Star that when deputies arrived on the scene, the father had obtained a weapon and was approaching the suspect. Scott says the deputies likely saved Stanley’s life.
The incident occurred at about 6:30 a.m. Dec. 29. According to the Richmond Times-Dispatch, Stanley had come to Virginia to visit relatives. The father of the two children, ages 2 and 3, went to their room to check on them when he reportedly saw Stanley molesting the children.
“When the (father) questioned what he was doing in the room, Mr. Stanley pushed (him) out of the room, then lock(ed) the door,” a news release says, according to the News Observer. “The (father) forced entry into the room and began beating Mr. Stanley.”
When deputies saw the father approaching the suspect with a firearm, they ordered him to drop the weapon. He complied, reports say. The father has not been charged and the investigation is ongoing.
