Authorities are searching for a woman who is accused of tossing seven newborn puppies into a dumpster in Southern California.

Video surveillance captured the unidentified woman pulling up behind an auto parts store in Coachella Thursday afternoon. She is then seen getting out of a white Jeep and throwing a small plastic bag into the dumpster before driving away.

The Riverside County Department of Animal Services said the bag contained the tiny pooches, all believed to be 3 days old and terrier mixes.

“There is no excuse for dumping puppies,” Commander Chris Mayer said in a statement. “Especially in today’s age when we or other shelters would be willing to get these animals to foster parents or rescue partners. This was a shameful act.”

A passerby, named John, found the puppies in the dumpster around 2 p.m. as he was rummaging through the trash He alerted authorities and cops arrived shortly after.

The temperatures that day reached the mid-90s. The puppies most likely would not have survived much longer in the heat had they not been found, the animal services department said.

“The Good Samaritan played a major role in saving theses puppies’ lives,” Mayer said. “His actions were humane and heroic.”

Mayer also added that he is working with the Riverside County Sheriff’s investigators and the District Attorney’s office to build “a strong cruelty case.”
