Woman smells burning from car finds squirrels have stashed winter food under the hood

A Pennsylvania couple is making national news after sharing a story that’s just plain nuts. Actually, walnuts.

Chris Persic shared a photo on Facebook of his wife’s SUV stuffed with 200 walnuts under the hood. Holly Persic said she called him Monday when the car smelled like it was burning, the check engine light was on, and she heard a weird sound as she drove to the Northland Libray in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania.

The couple discovered an engine full of grass and walnuts, neatly packed. It appeared to be winter food stashed by squirrels over the weekend when the vehicle had been parked out in the open.

Chris Persic said it took him almost an hour to “clean out over 200 (not an exaggeration) walnuts and grass from under the hood.”

“Long story short, if you park outside, do yourself a favor and check under the hood every once in awhile. My truck may have had a squirrel chew through/pull out a fuel injector hose, and Holly’s looked like they were storing up for the next 3 winters,” he wrote in a post that has since gone viral. “Was absolutely nuts…no pun intended.”

Reuters reports the couple was glad to be safe and appeared to be taking it all in stride.

“There’s definitely an angry squirrel wife right now wondering where all the nuts went”, Chris joked.
